Renault Scenic 95t - Won't Start After Cutting Out

Hi Guys, I have a problem that has been offered limited solutions so I will explain exactly what happened and what is happening now..before I do, I am no engine expert so I will do my best to try and explain parts :).



Ok, I was driving home and stuck in traffic, the next thing I heard like metal scraping..it appeared to be more so when I dipped the clutch but that could be coincidence as I was at the point of stopping. I set off again slowly and came to another stop at the lights and the engine just cut out, unable to start again. I tried to restart but It wouldn't. The engine turns but doesn't seem to want to fire is the best way I can describe it. The belts turn etc but apart from that, clueless. I di have someone have a quick look at it and they said the timing belt had gone, onother explained that if the timimg belt had gone, the thing in the top of the engine that is visible when you take the cap off would not turn but it does. So, that's about all I can tell you at this point. If anyone could offer a diagnosis from what I have explained so far, that would be a great help and very much appreciated.
