Really puzzled and stuck, even after reading similar posts and help would be much appreciated. Recently bought a Clio Authentique 1.2, late 2001. There is an intermittent but often loud creaking sound that seems to come from low down in a central location around the vicinity of the antiroll-bar support bushes (ARB) or steering rack area but not sure where exactly. Its most noticeable when turning the steering wheel but sometimes can be heard if bouncing the suspension too. Seems worse on the left hand (near) side but does not happen when the car is jacked up and steering wheel is moved with the suspension unloaded. Does not seem to happen immediately after lowering again either. Also seems worse after a period of driving when everything has warmed up.
First suspicion was a balljoint as both vertical and rotational movement causes the sound. But there does not appear to be play in any of these components. It does not seem to be coming from the top spring mounts either and springs are not broken.
Have sequentially sprayed round all bushes etc with WD40 in an attempt to isolate the source but to no avail. Both ARB rubber end link-bushes were replaced last week and the NS lower ball joint was replaced 2 years ago (its done 9,000 miles since then).
Have disconnected the NS track rod end and checked both inner and outer joints felt free but not loose.
The steering is of the electrically assisted type (built into the steering column) and the mountings seem firm. The NS gaiter was just replaced though as it had been leaking. I am unclear how the rack internals are lubricated on this arrangement and wonder if this could be a problem? However there is no free movement, backlash, judder or stiffness evident and the car just passed a rigorous MOT.
