Clio 2000 Shuddering and small rev counter jumps

Right then guys, I have never had a renault before, but after moving and being on the look out for a decently priced second hand car I picked up a 2000 Renault Clio with low mileage. It had done 53,000 miles when I bought it and is now at 55,600 miles in just shy of a year.

When I first got the car it seemed like a sweet run around car, and I still like it, just that fondness is somewhat ebbing away with the hassles for the thing.

A couple of months ago I noticed the breaks didnt feel right, I booked the car in at a garage but the night before it was due to go in the car broke down. In the middle of a main road, basically the rear brakes had seized, so much so that the car was stuck. We couldnt move it, had to wait 2 hours for recovery and paid ridiculously high prices to have it taken to a garage, low and behold it had to be to a different garage than the one it was booked in at unless we wanted to pay additional towing fees.

All the breaks needed to be replaced, so whilst they were taking it apart I asked the garage to give it a service and to take a look to see if there was any other work that needed doing; now or soon. Whenever I have asked this of mechanics in the past they have generally found a few things that they say can be done but may or may not be urgent. This garage told me that after the service was done they felt there was no other work needed. Fine by me, I paid them and off I went with renewed confidence in the vehicle.

Two days later the car broke down again, this time because whilst the garage had the car they had worked on the fuel line and either they had failed to reconnect it properly or it had come loose. Every time I had tried to start the car it was peeing fuel out from under it, fortunately our emergency break down cover decided it would cover us on this occassion so there was no out of pocket expenses. Naturally it dented my confidence in the garage that had just days before said everything was fine (yes mistakes can happen so maybe the new issues are nothing to do with the garage).

My brother has often called me a paranoid driver, if I hear or feel a weird noise or something not right I want the car looked at. But 9 times out of 10 there turns out to be a problem.

Now, the clio can be stationary and the rev counter will jump, not massively, just between 0 and 1000, but whilst is does the whole car judders, much like it would if you try to pull off in the wrong gear.

Sometimes, not all the time, the car will judder up until 2500 revs, between 2500 and 3000 revs it returns to its normal smooth feeling self. The rev counter then settles down and all is fine, it doesnt happen everytime I stop or start but its happened more than once when I am at a junction and it feels as though its about to stall despite being stationary.

There are no warning lights, no other movement on the dash than the rev counter. I honestly do not know much about cars so I am not sure whether the rev counter jumping and the car shuddering like it does hints at an electrical fault or whether, given that the shuddering doesnt happen in higher gears, whether its a gear box problem, or maybe even the clutch. I dont know, but Im hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.
