Which sensor?

At 2.15am, my daughter and I were 20 miles in to a 275 mile journey, in her Renault Scenic Fidji (2003) when the little engine light on the dash came on. The car, which is regularly maintained, had not shown any obvious problems, and there was no loss of power, but to be on the safe side we pulled into the next lay-by and called the RAC.

The RAC chap was very good, tested a lot of things with his gadgets, and said he could find nothing wrong. He said it looked like just the sensor had failed, the one that serves the catalyst I think he said. He said that if it came on again, just ignore it. It didn't appear again until we were some 30 miles from our destination! We also made the homeward journey on the same day, and the little light didn't come on until we were almost home.

Obviously we want to replace the sensor if we can, but could someone please tell me what I ask for, because I don't have a clue! Is replacing it something we could do ourselves, or would the car have to go to a garage for repair?

Your advice would be very welcome. Many thanks.
