Hi
Hope someone on this forum could give me some advice on what my problem may be and what I should do next.
My car is 2002 Rx4 2.0 16v with 75k on the clock that in the last 1000 miles has had a complete new clutch and rear prop shaft coupling and runs like a dream..... Or did until yesterday. This is where the trouble starts. I had two nearly new tyres on rims I recently purchased one of which needed a repair and decided to go to my local tyre shop for two new tyres to go with the two I already had. I phoned a couple of days before for a quote for two 215 65 16 tyres and got a reasonable price of £120. Two days later I went to the garage for the new tyres taking the two I had bought previously to be put on the car at the same time once the repair had been done on the damaged one. The fitter came out and asked which tyres I wanted him to change and I told him to put the new ones on the front and the two I had in the boot on the back once the repair to the damaged one was fixed. This he did. Two new tyres on the front, puncture repair to one which he put on the rear and also changed the other rear. £120 for the tyres £15 for the repair. I'm happy.
A couple of runs into town over the next day or so everything OK then went to London for the day a trip of about 45 miles each way. At about half way home at a steady 60 a noise that sounded as if a helicopter was hovering above got louder and louder and developed into a rhythmic knocking in time with wheel rotation that could be felt through the whole car. Pulled over grovelling around on the hardshoulder of the M2 but could find nothing obvious. Nothing loose, nothing leaking. Managed to drive on far enough get off the motorway and call out the
AA. They turned up could not find anything and loaded it onto the recovery truck. As he was trying them car down commented that they two new tyres on the front were of a different size to their rears. When I looked there two new fronts were215/60/16 and not 215/65/16 as they were supposed to be. After some research on both this forum and others it seems the different tyre sizes front and rear would put strain on the differential and could burnt it out at motorway speeds. Is this true? Why would a tyre fitter put smaller aspect ratio on a 4x4 at the front than were already fitted to the rest of the car? Could it damage the gearbox? Are they liable for the worst case scenario floor the cost of a rebuild for my now dead gearbox?
Sorry to waffle on. Any advice on what I should do next would be great fully received.
Thank you
