Hi,
New to the Forum. My other half has just bought herself a horsebox based on a 1996 Renault Master van, it's generally in very good condition and has been well looked after mechanically. However it seems to have an intermittent electrical problem on starting - what happens is that you switch on, wait for the glowplug warning light to go out and then turn the key, sometimes it starts fine, other times nothing, engine doesn't turn over at all and the lights in the instrument cluster go out.
The first time it happened I checked the positive terminal to see if it was a faulty connection (it wasn't - the terminal was tight and had been greased with Vaselline or similar), but as I moved the cable I heard a relay click so went and tried again and it started fine. It's been used half a dozen times since then with no problems but this morning it happened again. Horsebox moved to load horse, horse loaded, electrics dead once I turned the key after the glowplug light had gone out. Tried the positive terminal trick again, nothing. So tried the earth terminal, disconnected it (was also tight and greased), reconnected and once again heard the sound of a relay (?) or similar clicking, and once again it started immediately.
My knowledge of electrics is minimal, but I'm guessing it might be a faulty relay in the starting circuit?
Would appreciate any advice as to potential culprits and how to check?
Thank you
Alan C
