Removing Steering Inner Tie Rods using Heat . Espace Mk 2 1994

Hi,

Am trying to replace the Inner Ties Rods.

With full lock I can secure the actual Steering Rack Rod to protect the Steering Mechanism.

Similarly I can get a really good grip on the Inner Tie Rod Ball Joint housing using a big pair of mole grips with curved jaws that fit snug around the Ball Joint casing.

I can also get a good leverage on the Mole Grips but even so I just cannot get the Inner Rod to unscrew.

I have done a lot of WEB searching and found one chap in this Forum who tackled it using an angle grinder and simply cut the Ball Joint Housing in half more or less down the middle being careful not to go too far and it then unscrewed - obviously the joint got very hot in the process.

I do not have an Angle Grinder with me.

However someone else elswhere working on a 4L said that heating up the Inner Ball Joint casing with a Blow Lamp should melt the joint thread locking compound used by Renault and then the unscrewing should be easy.

Only thing that worrys about using heat is that on the outer end of the actual Steering Rack Rod itself where the Inner Ball Joint scews in is a cylindrical Nylon Stopper about size and shape of an old fashoined cotton reel.

The outer end of the Stopper is literally 2 to 3 mm away from the Inner Ball Joint Casing that I will be heating.

The Stopper is obviously there to prevent the steering rack going beyond full lock on each side.

Question is will I get away with heating up the Inner Ball Joint casing sufficiently to melt of the locking compount without damaging the Nylon 'Stoppers'??

Has anyone used heat to get the Inner Ball Joints to unscrew??

Grateful for any comment.

Rgds.
