Another misfire puzzle

2002 1.6 petrol Megane - new plugs and fuel filter, it has never run below the minimum on the dip-stick and had a new TDC sensor a few months back. I have chopped and changed coils (new and old) and that made no difference.

Problem - under load it misfires in 3rd, 4th and 5th between something like 2700-3200 revs (which until I realised the problem was linked to revs, I did not realise, is pretty much the rev range for all run-of-the-mill motoring).

If I floor the accelerator in 3rd, to overtake, it goes to over 4000 rpm with no misfiring. Most of my driving is on fast(ish) country roads, so I have not had an opportunity to take it beyond 3500 rpm in 4th or 5th. Uphill in 3rd doing 2700 revs and it misfires, change to 4th, dropping the revs, and it sails up.

With no load - on my local garage forecourt, it will not misfire, no matter what. It does, as pointed out to me, sound very "tappety".

The only warning light that OCCASIONALLY lights when it misfires is the emissions light, but that is a default warning, so I'm led to believe - it just indicates an engine problem of some sort, not specific.

The mpg readout gives around 41, which is where it has always eventually returned to after I have reset it.

Could it be a hydraulic tappet problem? Could it be an injector problem? But why not 1st and 2nd gears, or no load, and why only above around 2700 rpm and why not when it is caned to overtake?

Any suggestions more than gratefully received.
