Laguna III Spare wheel

I want to get a proper spare wheel for my Laguna, because it only has the basic reinflation kit and because I don't want to be stuck with no way to get to assistance if I have a damaged tyre. So, I'm looking to buy a new wheel and tyre for my Laguna, that I can use as an emergency spare (not for regular use).

I understand from Renault that you can buy a Renault steel wheel, part number 40-30-000-04R which has a 7J rim and is the right size for the car and this costs about £60. From checking the dimensions of the well in the boot, it looks as though it should go in OK and the car has the centre bolt and giant plastic "nut" for securing the spare. I haven't checked to see if one of my standard alloys will go in there, but it looks possible, although whether the boot floor would sit flat over it is another matter. I'm assuming that I can find a suitable tyre that will provide the same overall diameter as my standard alloys.

However, my concern is that my alloys are 17" diameter, fitted with Michelin Primacy 215/50R17 95W tyres. Would it be legal and also safe to use a 16" wheel as an emergency spare? (I wouldn't have a problem with a restricted speed, because it's on a "get you home/get to a tyre fitter" basis).

Also, does anyone know what is the narrowest tyre that can be fitted on a 7J rim? I would prefer to have a narrower tyre, to ensure that it will fit in the spare wheel location OK.

Thanks for your help!
