This forum helped me find solutions for fixing an electronic parking brake problem on my Laguna 11. So here is some feedback for others with a similar problem.
To recap.
I was getting a 'Check parking brake' fault message on my dash display, but the brake was operating normally.
The car was due MOT in about a month so I decided to live with the 'advisory' and have the fault checked then.
Meantime the battery kept losing power, I renewed it, used the car once and parked up. The following day the EPB refused to work.
Tried the emergency release and nothing happened. Called my breakdown company and they took the car to my local garage for them to investigate, access the EPB and repair if poss.
They did a diagnostic but could not clear the fault code. Brakes remained on so they cut both brake cables to make the car mobile!!!!!!
I drove the car home and have finally managed to fix the EPB.
My tips gained fom this experience.
1. The emergency release is a mechanical pawl and lever mechanism linking both cables within the EPB housing. It is under high tension when the brakes are on, therefore you need a very strong pull on it to separate the link. When this is done the car will be drivable. If the EPB is still working the link can be remade by a reset. Use the reset tip on this forum
2.Do not cut the brake cables as they are an integral part of the EPB and are not easily replaced.
3. Check the free movement of the inner cable at the caliper positions. With the brakes off, or emergency release used, Unclip the cable ends from the calipers and they should freely push in and out. Difficulty in doing this indicates a seized cable. If this happens to one cable the EPB will still operate, but on one side only, as the seized cable wil act as an anchor to the system.
4. Most importantly. Renault diagnostic may show a low power reading. This may not be due to a poor battery charge. Get a decent auto electrician to check the power feed wires to the EPB, with no voltage drop between the dashboard feed and the EPB. My power feed supply dropped from 14V to 8V due to internal wire corrosion found local to the multi connector under the rear seat. Stripped back to sound material, remade and full power feed restored.
