Espace Mk3 overheating

My 2.0 16v Espace Mk3 has recently started getting rather too hot.

It usually gets up to 4 bars on the dash gauge, but over the past week has been rising up to 5 or 6, and on one occasion got up to the max (9 bars) rather quickly and flashed up the "stop" warning.

I thought maybe it was a faulty thermostat, so I changed that, and ran the engine up to temperature. Thermostat seems to be working ok, but the temperature gauge kept on rising right up to 9 bars and the "Stop" warning, however just as I had hold of the keys to stop the engine the fan cut in and the temp dropped rapidly back to about 5 bars. I left it running and it kept cycling to very hot, fan kicking in for a short while, and the temp dropping back.

So my next suspect is the temperature switch for the fan, but I can't seem to find it....

I was expecting it to be located somewhere on the radiator, but there is nothing there!

I think I found the sender for the dash gauge on the side of the engine block, just under the airbox.

There are also a couple of sensors either side of the oil filter, one of which I guess is the oil pressure, is the other the coolant temp sender?

Am I looking in the right place?
