I have just bought a 2005 "55" plate Scenic 1.9 DCi. It has 134000 miles and I only paid £600 as it has an issue with excessive smoke.
I have been told by the previous owner that it is the oil seal in the turbo which has gone allowing too much oil through. When starting from cold and idling there is no smoke but as soon as I drive clouds of grey smoke (and I mean clouds). I did find an oil breather pipe wasn't attached to the canister/bottle thing which leads back into the oil filler cap area which I have now fixed back on with a jubilee clip. That couldn't have helped and was allowing oil vapour to drip down the engine block!!
He has had it serviced at Renault religiously and has spent thousands on it over the years. Renault quoted him a hefty sum to change the turbo and he thought he had spent enough and he would sell it.
I have a friend who can change the turbo for me relatively cheap and I can buy a reconditioned turbo for about £200.
My engine is the 88kw (120bhp) version and the engine code is F9Q D8. What serial number turbo do I need so I can buy it in advance without waiting for the old one to be taken off and would the symptons I describe be consistent with the turbo oil seal going?
Thanks, Lee.
