2011 Renault Grand Scenic 3 1.5dci Clutch & Start Issues

Have had a good read of other threads and have used some of the advice but not got to bottom of issue yet.

The wife was driving the car home and upon pulling up at the lights and selecting first she heard a 'ping' and the car wouldn't select any gears and clutch pedal had gone. \She turned car off, waited a minute and then turned on and tried again. She got it into first but then it started to smoke so she switched off again.
She called me and I walked round to where she was approx 10 minutes later. When I got there the car wouldnt even start, relays in the dash click and everything lights up as it should but nothing happens.
Have tested the battery with a battery tester (as well as a meter) and battery is fine. Cleaned and checked the connection at the starter motor and it is fine and gets 11.5V when starter is pressed but doesn't turn over.
Checked TDC sensor as well as Glow plugs as per the 1.5dci thread and all is good there.

So this leaves me with a few questions. Would the clutch having gone not let the car start due to start requirements??
The clutch pedal is light but I can select all gears with it sat on the drive.

Have checked all fuses in both glovebox and engine bay and all are sound - also no signs of water ingress.
Clutch was showing no signs of slippage in the few days before when I was driving. I suspect cylinder has gone, but would have thought would have seen this effect brake fluid level (this is fine - would have thought if a seal etc had gone would have lost fluid!)
I realise that starter could also be dead but it seems too much of a coincidence for both to go at the same time.

Any ideas or experience would be appreciated!!

(It's being towed to my brothers garage tomorrow as I know am gonna have to drop the box and clutch out to change cylinder (and/or clutch whilst I am at it). Just looking for other options.
Lack of availability of any workshop manuals for the 3 isn't helping!!
