Help - smoke and oil spurting

Hello everyone, first time poster, unfortunately not for the best of reasons.

I should start by saying I know 0 mechanics and am not from the UK so I have a hard time expressing myself technically in english. I thank you all for your help.

I have a Megane II hatchback 1.9dci 120bhp from 2002.

Yesterday the girldfriend took the car out for a drive and said there was a smell of smoke about the car as well as a LOW OIL warning on the dashboard computer. She did not drive the car anymore.

This morning I checked the oil level, which was at bare minimum and promptly topped it up. The warning on the dashboard is gone and says oil level is correct.

However, as there was still smoke coming out from under the engine cover, I took it out (some mechanic broke the attachements a while back so its not even bolted down anymore - easy) and found out from where all the smoke came from.

I took some photos of it - please see attachments below.

There's smoke and spurts of oil coming out of there with relative pressure, staining everything around it in oil.

Also, when the car starts, it does a bit of rumbling, as if gasping a bit before starting normally. It started doing that 2 days ago. Could it be related?

Can anybody tell me what this is? What should I do?

I again thank everyone in advance for any help you might give me.

Cheers,
nwbdan
