Clio II gearbox earth strap location *PICS*

Just a short thread for information purposes.

When searching the forum (and other web pages) for a recent problem related to the gearbox to chassis earth strap on my Clio II, I found many requests for the location of this strap. People seemed to have a little difficulty finding it and common responses were just worded descriptions of its location on the gearbox.

After removing my earth strap today I took some clear photos in order to show people (in future searches) where this problematic earth lead is. With any luck, this thread will pop up in a forum search by the next person needing to locate it.

The strap is braided and not sheathed, it is also mounted low down and is therefore susceptible to oxidation from road water and salt. Consequently it causes electrical issues such as a non start, as it did for me here:

To locate the strap, jack the car up (support it on axle stands) and remove the front nearside road wheel:

Peel back the plastic arch liner and look at the gearbox:

You should see the strap where it attaches to the front, lower side of the gearbox with a 13mm bolt:

The follow the strap off to the left and you'll find the chassis 13mm bolt. If the strap is in poor condition (green oxidation, flaky and soft strands) then replace it otherwise it'll soon end up like this:

The above was mine, quite literally hanging on by a thread. It resulted in the car failing to start.

Anyway, hope that helps someone in the future. :)
