espace iv starter motor replacement

Hi all, I have just bought a 2006 1.9dci espace, had a few issues , replaced abs pump, and a few other silly bits and it now drives beautifully ,when it starts!

I went to take it to mot Saturday and it wouldn't start. it goes through all the diagnostics when you put the key in the slot, you press the button and click is all you get. I started it by rocking it , changed the battery and jumping from another car, wasnt sure at the time which did it but it just started and I raced off to the test centre. failed on a/r/b droplinks (fitting as we speak) . The mot guy said he started it by giving the starter motor a whack, now I have had a look underneath and it is properly buried.

First question is that it seems to be ok at starting when the engine is warm / the car has very recently been running so could it not be the starter motor and something else.

The starting procedure of pressing clutch/brake etc , what should it actually be? because ive started this without my foot being on either, so could it be a micro switch issue on one of the pedals?

and my last question is what is the best way to get at/replacement procedure for the starter motor. cos it looks like a pig and anyone who has done one could potentially save me a lot of grief.

Thanks in advance
