Intermittent electronic and exhaust gas warning lights

I have a Clio MkII 1.2 16 valve 2005 (2003 model year) which intermittently displays warning lights. The first light to appear is always the electronic fault light followed shortly afterwards by the exhaust gas monitor warning light. The first electronic fault light seems to only arise just as the engine is started - I've yet to see it appear while the car is being driven. If I connect an OBD code reader to the car, it always reports P0638 - throttle actuator control.

I've had a look at the FAQs (especially the one about chafing of the ECU wiring loom) and have read quite a few threads about the need to clean the throttle housing when the engine runs rough at idle or throttle actuator errors are reported. I plan to check out the ECU wiring and the throttle housing as soon as possible.... but I have a few questions before I can start....

First, the car is relatively low mileage - just 46,000. Does the throttle body suffer from build-up of gunge in that sort of mileage? I've seen it reported as a problem with cars that have done twice the mileage of mine, but I've never seen it reported as a problem with low mileage vehicles.

Second, what is the correct way to remove the engine cover on my car? !!!

I've done major DIY jobs on cars in the dim and distant past - including engine removal and complete rebuild - but those days were a while ago when engines were a lot more accessible and a lot simpler than they are now!

I've got a Haynes Manual for my car, but it doesn't show my particular engine variant in any sort of detail.... The inlet manifold, spark plugs, camshaft casing are all covered by a large black plastic cover which seems to be secured by several screws from below. In addition, there are two or three fittings with rubber washers or mounts. The Haynes manual just says, rather unhelpfully, "remove the engine top cover". There are no pictures and no specific instructions as to which screws to remove and how to undo the rubber-mounted fittings.

I've put a couple of pictures on Dropbox that show the engine cover, the rubber mountings/fixings and one or two of the fixing screws.

Can anyone tell me if, on a 46000 mile car, a dirty throttle body is likely to be causing the warning lights and, if so, how is the engine cover removed.

Many thanks,

Mike
