No door sensors on new sport tourer?

I picked up a brand new 64 plate Megane Sport Tourer on Christmas Eve, replacing my 61 plate hatchback. Everything's fine except the optical sensors on the door handles don't work. The hands-free locking works perfectly in every other regard: locks when I walk away, locks and unlocks from the button on the door handles and from the key fob, etc.

I spoke to the dealer and they told me that's how they are now and that they've withdrawn the optical sensor because there were so many problems with them. Although the doors have the sensor windows, he claims the sensor is either not there or deliberately not working.

The only thing backing him up is the fact that this model has a button on all four door handles so the car can be locked and unlocked from any door whereas my older model only had a button on the drivers door.

We looked around the lot for a similar model to check against, but everything else either had no sensors at all or only one button. We did find one hatchback that seemed to have the same configuration, but it had other issues (e.g. the key fob wouldn't unlock properly).

Am I being given the runaround, or have Renault genuinely withdrawn the optical sensors on the door handles on cars that still have the sensor windows?
