w reg megane problem

Hi all newbie here I have a problem I bought a w reg 1.6 16v megane convertible the teeth on the timing belt had snapped off causing it to slip I have changed the belt and timed it up to the best of my knowledge it's turning by hand free enough but it won't start it's as if it's not sparking I know there could be a possibility of bent valves but would this stop it from firing up the starts turning just not firing up thanks in advance for any advice
