Clio dCi non start (no crank).

My wife left the Clio in 1st earlier today and forgot to dip the clutch when attempting to start the engine. The car jerked forward, she realised and turned the ignition off. She then tried again (car not in gear now) and the engine would not crank this time. The cavalry was promptly called and I arrived to assess the damage.

I can hear a relay (don't know if it's a relevant one) inside the cabin clicking when I engage the start position on the ignition barrel. I cannot hear the starter solenoid. The engine does not turn. The battery shows 12.6v at rest. The headlights do not dim when engaging the start position on the ignition barrel.

The car has completed ~200 faultless miles this weekend. One hour before the non start issue the car had driven 30 faultless miles to my wife's place of work, as it has always done. The glow plug light illuminates and extinguishes as it should when the ignition is switched on. The 'service' light is not illuminated.

Join me on this wonderous journey I'm about to undertake! I'll regale you with tales of woe, no doubt.

Later today and/or tomorrow I intend to:

- check the earth strap between the gearbox and chassis to see if the jolting has dislodged it.
- put a jump lead between the battery negative terminal and the engine block then try to start it.
- try to either bump or tow start it, depending on how manly I feel.
- check the starter main 12v feed for voltage.
- check the solenoid wire for a signal.
- cry with frustration through many of these tasks due to the inaccessibility of the bloody starter motor itself. Back of the engine block FFS. Seriously? Poor design.

Before I begin this repair, does anyone have any experience, thoughts, advice or tips for me? I'll post up some pictures if I find any relevant for future use. :)
