Pencil Coil Failures

Does the team think (that dates me dunnit) that coil failure can be caused by lack of regular servicing ?

Given that petrol fuelled cars have their coils sited in the worst conditions for longevity, i.e the hottest part of the engine. Which cannot be best for the insulation.
Also they necessarily have to be small, which means tight windings of thin wire.
Could there be a link between coil failure & an excessive plug gap? I.E. if the gap is greater than the recommended 0.95mm, then IMHO bigger the gap gets the more likely the spark is to arc inside the coil rather than across the plug. Once this has happened, breaking down the insulation, then surely it's more likely to continue. AFAIK plugs should be changed every 18K miles. Historically cars had their plug gaps checked every 6 or 9 K miles & replacement at 20K. Perhaps there is a correlation between these longer distance service mileages & coil failures?
