Scenic III - dash mounting phone/routing cables

I'm looking to fit a dashboard mount for my iPhone, but I'm in a bit of a quandry as to the best place to put it. I use the Brodit proclip mounting system, and there seem to be three positions I could mount my phone:

1) On the middle air vents

Pros: Ideal position for being able to see the screen and poke and prod it. Easy to connect to the USB socket.

Cons: I really don't like obstructing the air vents, and it will be very obtrusive, spoiling the look of the dash.

2) On the A-pillar

Pros: Position of the phone is still quite viewable and accessible, if not quite as good as option 1.

Cons: Connecting to the USB socket would be a massive pain in the neck. I'd have to find a way to route the cable under the dash trim, or rely on bluetooth and suffer battery drain.

3) By the gear stick

Pros: Positioned right next to the USB socket. Probably the least obtrusive mounting position.

Cons: It's out of the line of sight whilst driving. Slightly interferes with operation of the cruise control switch.

I'm debating between 2 and 3, really. If I could figure out how to unobtrusively run a cable to the A-pillar I'd probably go with 2, but I can't find any info on removing the trim to route cables, and I'd be worried about damaging something in any case. Using it wirelessly is an option, but my battery life isn't the best, and I like to get out of the car with a fully charged phone rather than hoping listening to my tunes hasn't sapped its life away!

So 3 might be my best option. My main worry is that it's down so low; hopefully, this won't be a problem as thanks to the car's built in functions, I won't be using it as a satnav, and should hardly ever have to do more than glance at it.

I guess there should be a point to all this, eh! In a nutshell, can anyone point me in the direction of some info on routing a cable from the USB socket to the A-pillar? Otherwise, I'll likely just mount the phone down by the gearstick.
