My '00 1.2 Clio uses a fair amount of oil and has done since I've owned the car for the last 6 months and it's never been an issue as I just top it up when needed.
As many of you will have read, she's just been in for a service. When I went to pick her up one of the mechanics said "you do know it's burning a lot of oil right?", I presumed this was just advice to make sure I'm keeping on top of it (I'm a new driver so maybe he didn't expect me to check on things like this). The next day the car was back in the garage to have the tappets adjusted and a different mechanic mentioned the large amount of oil being burned. This got me worrying that maybe it had suddenly got a lot worse since I tend to check the dipstick once a week. If it helps they also said that the spark plugs had been affected by this and that they will need to be replaced more often than usual.
Now since having the service last week I've done around 500 miles and the oil level hasn't left the top of the dipstick so it can't be that bad. Since I've had the car I've been trying to work out how much oil it burns per mile but the figures are all over the place! Sometimes it can drop halfway down the dipstick within the week, doing less than 300 miles and like I mentioned, sometimes 500+ miles without any noticeable drop!
It doesn't seem to be related to engine strain, or length of journey's.
There is a little smoke on start-up from both warm and cold when throttle is first applied (not the usual water vapour). It's not enough to see out the window, only if the wind is behind you or someone is stood behind the car when you set off. Is this normal? And could it be related to the oil consumption?
Anyone got any insights? Sorry it's a long post, I seem to get carried away with context.
EDIT: The smoke on start is clean white, not blue.
