Ive had a 2000 2ltr espace for 6 weeks. It's petrol but always sounded like a diesel.
Few days ago I noticed the diesel sound would subside, and the car would sound like a normal quiet petrol engine.
After some experimenting, this is what ive found.....
The diesel sound sounds like a knock mixed with a tapping and only happens on start up.
When I accelerate or car warms up it stops making that sound.
If I accelerate quick the noise comes back, then if I accelerate quick again, it goes away.
Could this be the dephaser?
If so, how safe is it to carry on driving? I have no starting problems or rough running etc.
