Greetings!
I'll try to give as much info as poss on this but we're getting desperate so I thought I'd ask the collective brains of this forum first!
I have a mk2 megane 1.6 petrol sport tourer.
At Christmas the car conked out completely with no warning. It would turn over but wouldn't fire up.
AA man came and after wiggling the wires connected to the crankshaft position sensor it started fine.
Off we went then a few miles down the road it went again. Same AA man came out and towed us to a mates house. (Bearing in mind we were 270 miles from home visiting relatives and we had a newborn in the car).
My mate and I set about rewiring the sensor and got the car running although it was running like a sack of ****e. Wouldn't run cleanly below 2000 revs and would only tick over for about 5 seconds before cutting out.
Add to that there was a strong smell of petrol and loads of fumes. Like the car was flooding.
But at least it was running... We left it for a couple of hours then tried to start it again but it didn't want to start at all.
The following day we got a mobile mechanic who fitted a replacement crankshaft position sensor.
This got the car running but still wouldn't run cleanly below 2000 revs.
Once the car was warm it would tick over fine but about 200 revs lower than usual. But it was good enough to make the long journey home.
Anything over 2000 revs the car runs fine smooth as anything, but as soon as you slow down and the revs drop it tries to stall/flood hesitate etc...
And so its been like this ever since - low fuel economy, smell of fuel, revving the nuts off it to stop it stalling is all taking its toll as its a pig to drive in all the snow we've had here in the last week or two.
Its not the CPS.. the coils are green coloured which I've been told are the modified ones, but they haven't been replaced. Three different people have tried to plug in a diagnostic reader with no luck and at no point during all this have i seen a single warning light come up on the dash.... previous owner disconnected it all to hide something?
We really want to avoid a costly witch hunt to find the problem. I've tried the search feature and found lots of reference to aspects of this problem but no real resolutions.
So if I've missed something there I'm sorry but I could really use some guidance on this!
Cheers all! :d
