RX4 1.9DCi power loss

Same old story as many other threads. Car had trouble starting mid-last week. I put it down to drained battery from cold starts, short journeys with fans and screen heaters on etc.

However we got it started once it warmed up a bit, but it's having real trouble getting power. At standstill, foot to the floor the engine revs up to around 2500 rpm fairly slowly, then hesitates for a bit before going up to 5k.

When driving, it struggles to get beyond 2k, no acceleration.

Having done a bit of reading, I tried disconnecting the MAF sensor and the hesitation and lack of power disappears. The car has always seemed a bit sluggish to me since we got it, so I can't really tell if it's back at full power when the MAF is disconnected, but it's way better than when it's plugged in.

After some further reading it seems that it's worth checking the EGR valve. As I'm taking it out anyway, I've decided to blank it off (have done similar in my S-Max with good results) so will be doing that when the weekend rolls around.

While I'm at it, is there anything else I should check? Assuming sorting the EGR doesn't fix it, where else do I need to look? Is there any way I can determine if the MAF is at fault? There are no warning lights on the dash (yet).
