Spent the weekend replacing cam belt and dephaser as at 80k it was overdue and there was a bit of noise from around the dephaser . All back together started it up and it now sounds like a noisy diesel with a real metallic clatter. On thing that was bugging me on re assembly was that Haynes said to check the dephaser is neither advanced or retarded but how do you tell? Secondly can the timing have slipped far enough to cause the clatter but still run? And if that's the case would I now have some bent valves?
