I just thought I'd add a few pictures of unexpected corrosion as a timely remind for us to check or vehicles.
A couple of weeks ago, I was under my car (2005 Laguna Sport tourer) to check over a few things, in particular the brakes. Whilst underneath I took the opportunity to check for any corrosion or other apparent faults.
My attention was drawn to the strap that secures the fuel tank in place, I noticed it was quite badly rusted. It's more like a flattened piece of steel tube that is bolted in place at either end and fits snugly around the fuel tank.
As I was sourcing some other parts for the car from a local breakers (Just Renaults of Walsall) I asked them if they had one of these straps. They did and it cost me £10. It was in quite good condition and partly powder coated but there were some areas where the coating was bubbling.
When I got it home, I began to clean up the newer strap and eventually wired brushed the whole strap down as the coating was coming away in several places. I applied Kurust to it, then primed it and applied 3 coats of stonechip paint followed by 2 coats of rubberised black paint. Looked like new.
When I was under the car last week, I began to unbolt the old strap (tank supported) and after a few turns of the first bolt (right hand side) the strap broke, it was completely rusted through and what was left was the thickness of tin foil. The old strap came off easily and was quickly replaced with the new reconditioned item.
I have taken some pictures of the old strap. Might be worth checking next time you're under you car for things like this.
