Quick intro and on to problem(s)!

Hi Folks.

I bought my 2006 Trafic 100dci in 2012 after the previous owner drove it through a flood and bent a rod.

I'm not a mechanic but an avid D.I.Y.er and as an owner of three lancia Betas, I have no fear of anything mechanical or electrical.

Anyway, I rebuilt the damaged engine and exactly three years ago today, put my van on the road.

In January this year, I fitted a new clutch inc. pressure plate, disc, slave cylinder/bearing and master cylinder, a new starter and battery, new front struts with top mounts and bearings and new pads along with replacing all fluids.

all went well until about two weeks ago when the heater wouldn't heat for ages, would then get warm and then cold again.

I replaced the thermostat last week and bled the system.

Having said that, the van has always been slow to warm taking about 6 or 7 miles of driving before it would start to produce heat so the 'stat was well due to be replaced.

Now, the system seems to be building pressure to the point of blowing the release valve on the tank cap, the heater starts to warm up almost immediately and when the engine reaches full operating temperature, the heater goes cold again and may eventually warm up and function for the rest of the journey only to repeat the sequence again next time I drive.

I've bled the system several times at the thermostat and upper and lower heater hose valves and I notice the top hose is stone cold after the gauge shows the engine to be at normal temperature.

Is it possible I've bought a faulty 'stat or am I missing something?

Apologies for the long-winded post but I want to provide as detailed a description of the issue as possible.

I have read several posts on here regarding similar issues but I can't find a relevant solution.

Please help!

Thanks
