Odd question maybe, let me explain. About 6 weeks ago the slave cylinder went. All sorts of dramas getting that fixed with much help from this forum. Thanks again guys.
Anyways, since then Maggie developed a new noise while doing any heavy steering. Like reverse parking or anything lock to lock. A kind of clunking. Quick look on here before going to the garage and once again this forum spot on. Top shock mounts had gone. I could see the spring clunking around as they turned the wheels on the ramp. I was worried it would be the steering rack as that was the other suspect mentioned on here. The garage said leave it over the weekend and would be ready for Monday.
However they've just rung up and said they noticed while putting her back together the steering rack is damaged and needs replacing. Most likely from a previous garage repair. They said it doesn't look like normal wear and I should ring the previous garage and complain and get them to pay for the replacement.
So that's why I need to know if the steering rack comes off or can get damaged during a clutch repair. This garage has no reason to lie but I don't want to ring up the other garage and accuse them of poor work and demand recompense if they went no where near the broken rack.
I read the haynes manual procedure for replacing a clutch before she had hers fixed and i don't recall anything about steering rack coming off. Just drive shafts coming out but that was a while ago so maybe I've forgotten. She did have a wish bone replaced last year. Could it have happened then?
Any advice appreciated. I have to ring the garage back this afternoon but I'm stuck at work so I've no chance to get the book out and read through it.
Many thanks.
