Software/Firmware updates

Software/Firmware updates
Is there any way I can determine if my car has any pending software updates?
I did ask the local dealer, and they said the only way they could tell, was to plug in the diagnostic computer, which would then install any required updates. Cost - £90, and it might not even need any.
So is there any official documentation from Renault which allows me to:-

a) Determine the software revision installed on my car (Grand Scenic '63 reg)
b) Indicate what updates I could, or should install
Electronic Fault Grand Scenic MK II 54 Plate
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, recently i had to change the bulb on the passenger break light since i have changed this bulb i know get an electronic fault warning on the dashboard whenever i drive with the lights on, when i get the error on the dash if i turn the lights off and on again the error message goes away again for 10-15mins then reappears.
Loss of power laguna dci 131ps laguna
Hi guys,
need some help with my 2006 laguna dci 131ps after i mounted a new cover to fit over the injectors.(Black plastic cover with two 10mm screws). To fit that i took of the pipe from the intercooler with the throttle body.First i unhocked the minus from the battery of course. Then i unhocked the plug for the mapsensor and the throttle body so i could give the pipe it self and the butterfly a good clean with brake cleaner.I did not move the butterfly with my fingers! Then mounted everything back in the same way before i connected the battery minus back on.Then my problem...after start up i took it for a drive and i felt instantly that i didnt have the power i had before this was done.No limp mode but i feel its missing 20-30ps... i have checked that everything is mounted as it was.Even bought a new mapsensor. So my questions are:

-Is it a process to reset the throttle body after my small DIY on the 1.9 dci?

-When engine is shut off and the keycard taken out of the cardreader,i can see the butterfly is fully open and its also open in the same way when the car is running without driving, and without touching the pedal. Is that correct?

-How can i check that the throttle body is in the correct setting?

One thing happend when i drove it for the first time after my DIY! I flored it out on the third gear and it suddenly stalled and didnt respond on the pedal for some seconds! Never experienced that before the job,or not after that one time either.Hocked up my scanner and it came up with DF008 fault code: pedal potensiometer.Erased it and it has not come back again by now..

My sugguest is pressure leak or more likely throttle body adjustment or fault with that caused by cleaning it.

Hope someone can help..

Thanks

LAGUNA 3 ABS issues
Hi,

I have a Laguna 3, 2007 2.0 dci dynamic.
For the past couple of weeks I have been having an intermittent abs/check brakes/esp warning. When connected to a friends diagnotic we got 2 codes both have no hits when searching the internet. Today I took the car to a garage for diagnostic and it returned only a C0020 code and the mech told me it’s probably the abs controller and they would charge £400 to get it refurbished. Being an intermittent fault I’m worried that the refurb company might return it no fault found.

I’ve seen a couple of posts where people have successfully sent units away for refurb, or replacing with second hand unit. Any advice for this particular code? And I’m assuming the abs controller can’t be separated from the pump easily? At least looking at pictures of the assembly I can’t seem to make out what is pump and what is controller, unless the photos are just the controller?
Also I don’t have a manual and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the net on how to get to it.....again I’m assuming it is in the same position as on a Laguna 2, there’s a couple of videos on Laguna 2’s. Lives behind the front bumper driver Side?

How to change this DPF rubber pipe? 2.0 DCI
Hi all,

So the Laguna III 2.0 DCI 180hp keeps regenerating...

I’ve changed one of the rubber pipes closest to the rear of the car but can I hell get my hands in to get access to the other pipe which seems to run towards the engine and around a corner and under some metal housing?

How has anyone else changed this pipe?

I’ve attached pictures for the pipe I mean.

Many thanks

Reviving the Remap/Chip debate. Clio II 1.5dci
I have read with interest all that I could find on here (and elsewhere) regarding the suitability or not of remapping or chipping my Clio. For clarity it's a 2002, Mk II, 1.5dci, 82hp 3 door model. Fairly high mileage (for UK tastes) but runs and goes very well.

In asking for opinions and input I'm broadly laying out my thoughts here, so is likely to touch on related topics. Please feel free to chip in (no pun intended!) or even shoot me down (politely).

From the information around it seems that irrespective of the merits or advisability of a chip vs remap, almost everyone is advertising gains between +20hp - +35hp (!!), and corresponding increases in torque.

First thing to make clear is this: IF it turns out to be sensible and realistic to do, I would only be doing this in order to have that occasional bit of extra to make driving more comfortable, and NOT for any style of competition, time trialling etc. thus wouldn't imagine I'm putting the car under any undue stresses. Again feel free to correct me.

Having read through many posts here forgive me if I don't namecheck the OPs - there was a LOT to read through! :P

Let's just assume for a moment that a power gain of around 20hp was achievable.

There's the point well made that since manufacturers spend zillions on R&D, they'd hardly release a car (one assumes) with a performance which, for not very much money, could be drastically improved. Thus, the idea that one could take the engine in my car and by simply waving some magic and a couple of hundred pounds, it's suddenly both much more powerful yet somehow more economical (I've read the thinking behind that i.e. lower revs, less gear changes) and at the same time I'm left with a non-compromised reliability.

Then again, I just looked up the Wikipedia article on the Clio. According to that, all phase 2 Clios use the K9K common rail diesel. That being the case, I'm left to wonder why three models of the 1.5 output 65, 82 and 100hp respectively. Anyone able to enlighten me? Is it mechanical, or simply ECU based?

I've also satisfied myself that (perhaps wrongly) it's a complete waste of time bothering with either an induction kit or to change the air filter. Lots of information and views on that I found here.

Other questions:

Chipping: common opinion seems to be that chips are overall a bit 'meh' as they do either very little or not much, depending on how many sensors they 'fool'.

Reading over archived posts, some people have had trouble getting after-market chips to run without them throwing and injection fault code, thereby disabling the car. I'm currently looking at the items sold by Bluespark. They claim all sorts of power and fuel gains from the part supplied for my car, with NO mention of possible installation issues: https://www.bluesparkautomotive.com/...2-ps-pro-boost

With regard to remaps, Celtic E seem to stand out (among others). What surprised me upon contacting them was that they suggested I could just mail in my ECU (since they have no dealers in my country). That being the case, it caused me to wonder just what is going on with the remapping if it's so 'generic'. Or does the car's ECU retain some form of 'memory' that ties it to the particular vehicle?

If the differences between the various versions of the Clio 1.5dci are down to mapping, could I not simply fit the ECU from the 100hp version to my car? Or is that utter madness?

Lastly: has anyone ever tried 'home based' remapping? After all, it comes down to an interface, some wires and a computer. Not quite sure why the cost of a remap can run to 400 euros if you don't even need the car to be present!

Thoughts or opinions anyone??

p.s. please don't link back to archive posts, although I'm NOT claiming I've read the entire forum cover to cover :)
Ruddy bright headlights
Wow, just how bright are these stupid kin headlights going to get.
My Toyota's headlights are bright but bad bright. You get a bright square that stops definitively at a point a set distance ahead. After that its black unless you use main beam which makes people a hundred miles away squint.

The old Mondeo's headlights blended into the dark and gave far better and less tiring visibility than the modern rubbish.

People could see you coming and the headlights wernt eye wateringly bright on just dip.

What is with the modern 'safety mad' world that we are getting vehicles with headlights so bright they blind oncoming cars on just dip. People are GOING to get killed because they cannot see where they are going and may well head on the car with the 'safer' modern headlights.

Sorry to rant but i cannot believe it hasn't been brought up as a serious road danger yet.

I got back an hour ago to find my nearside headlight wont turn off. Its stuck on dip beam even with ignigtion off. I tried pulling fuses but none of them seem to control the lights. The Indian With One Testicle
There once was an Indian who had only one testicle
and whose given name was 'Onestone'. He hated that
name and asked everyone not to call him Onestone.
After years and years of torment, Onestone finally
cracked and said,' If anyone calls me Onestone
again I will kill them!'
The word got around and nobody called
him that any more.
Then one day a young woman named Blue Bird
forgot and said, 'Good morning, Onestone.' He
jumped up, grabbed her and took her deep into
the forest where he made love to her all day and
all night. He made love to her all the next day,
until Blue Bird died from exhaustion.
The word got around that Onestone meant what
he promised he would do. Years went by and no
one dared call him by his given name until A woman
named Yellow Bird returned to the village after being
away. Yellow Bird , who wasBlue Bird's cousin, was
overjoyed when she saw Onestone. She hugged him
and said, 'Good to see you, Onestone.'
Onestone grabbed her, took her deep into the forest,
then he made love to her all day, made love to her all
night, made love to her all the next day, made love to
her all the next night, butYellow Bird wouldn't die!

Why ???

OH, come on.... take a guess !!!

Think about it !!!

You're going to love this !!!

Everyone knows...

You can't kill Two Birds

withOneStone!!!

I remember the cheese of my childhood
and the bread that we cut with a knife
When the children helped with the housework,
and the men went to work, not the wife.

The cheese never needed a fridge
and the bread was so crusty and hot.
The children were seldom unhappy
and the wife was content with her lot.

I remember the milk from the bottle,
with the yummy cream on the top.
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
and not from the fridge; in the shop.

The kids were a lot more contented,
they didn't need money for kicks.
Just a game with their mates in the road
and sometimes the Saturday flicks.

I remember the shop on the corner,
where a pen'orth of sweets was sold.
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it....I'm just getting old?

I remember the 'loo' was the lavvy
and the bogey man came in the night.
It wasn't the least bit funny
going "out back" with no light.

Hung on a peg in that loo,
were interesting items to view,
from newspapers cut into squares.
It took little to keep us amused.

Dirty clothes were boiled in the copper,
with plenty of rich foamy suds.
But the ironing seemed never ending
as Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.

I remember the slap on my backside
and the taste of soap if I swore.
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
and we hadn't much choice what we wore.

Do you think that bruised our ego?
or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
and I think life was better enjoyed.

But a huge fact not hereto mentioned
in this mushy tale of nostalgic rejoice,
is the reason we all "enjoyed" our lot
Was that we had NO BLOODY CHOICE.....

Renault Scenic 2.0 16v rear main leak **Fixed**
I have a renailt scenic which came in with a half-rebuilt engine. Dis the engine still in place and on running it there was quite a bad leak from the bell housing. Took iut the gearbox, sure enough there was a show of oil running down tge rear main seal. Fitted a new seal, reassemble. Leak was worse, so i pulked out the rear main bearing, rwmoved the torn rubber sauer seal insetts m, refitted the bearing, torwed it, and pumped silicone sealer until it swuezzed through all possibke openings. Left it overnight. Still leaks, even worse now. The box is now out for 4 th time and all said n done there is just no way this can be so. No cracks, no gaps, good quality seal was fitted and even tightened up a touch
Feel like I should tow it to the locsl scrap yard.... ANY ideas please?

Scenic mk1 2002 gearbox selector spring
Hello everyone. New to this forum. Posted this in wrong section earlier (My Mottah...sorry)

Sorry if there is a thread already regarding this query also.

I wonder if anyone maybe able to help me.
I am trying to source what I believe is called the gearbox selector spring for my Scenic Mk1 2002 1.8L Dynamique.

I called my local Renault dealership today, & the guy in parts managed to provide me with a part number 7701685500, but then proceeded to inform that the part is no longer available from Renault.

It is visually identical to the spring in the 1st attachment, & part no.23 in 2nd attachment

Does anyone know where such a part can be sourced if Renault no longer stock it???

Many thanks in advance

Can anybody explain this 1.9 dci breather flow diagram?
Hi, can anybody help me understand the operation of breather flow in the 2005 espace 1.9 dci oil separator –breather valve unit ? (Number 13 in diagram, including the bits below) This appears the same as on 1.9 dci scenic, laguna, megane etc, except some of these models also have a big circular valve vapour valve on the return pipe (number 10) which goes back to the pipe that comes out the air filter box. Not sure why mine does not have it and is pipe number 9 instead.. but the renault dealer said might be automatics have added breathing valves.

See the renault diagram here.. the breather in mine is

I made a diagram of what I understand about the crankcase gas flow, and what is not clear. I have moderate blowby so want to test if the breather unit is operating by blowing into it. So I need to understand the gas flow.

It would help if anybody can explain which way round the PCV valve inside the breather controls gas flow.

Does it control the gas coming from the flow of the breather outputs into it (black arrows in diagram).. So to test its operation I would blow in from the side of the unit. At moderate blow it will let what I blow in pass through, on hard blow it will stop the air.

Or does it control the gas flow coming back from the air intake down into the top of the breather to counterbalance the crank gas output at higher rpm ? again to test its operation I would blow in from the side of the unit. At moderate blow it will let what I blow in pass through, on hard blow it will stop the air.

Cheers.. I cant find any explanation of these combined diesel oil separator, valve systems online.
Thought you might enjoy this ,musis a bit naff mind you !
Renault Traffic Link Sat Nav
I have a Traffic crew cab and I have had this from new 2017, it has the Link Sat Nav with Tom Tom, it keeps going off and will not come back on again till the engine is turned off and I open the door, then restart the engine, then it comes back on, Renault have no way to fix this as they have been trying for 9 months, and still not working, is there any other owners out there with the same problem, I have no doubt Renault will stop this because they are so embarrassed about the situation!! it will be intresting..
2007 master side lights and dash lights not working
As per the title. If I try to turn the side lights on, I get nothing, no indication, lights, no voltage at the lights and the dash lights don't come on. If I go to dipped beam, that works but still no dash lights. I presume the dash lights are linked to the side lights.
All other functions on the stalk work perfectly

Trafic 1982 shaking to pieces
Hiya, my name's Matt and I was brought to these forums thanks to RW's thread about his camper :grin2:

Few weeks ago I bought my first (converted) camper - really happy to finally own one, hoping to travel around europe this fall!

It's got a 2.1D, 5 speeds and a portapotty filled up by the last owner. Lovely stuff!

I've spent many nights working it up and it's almost passed MOT - only the speedo left to fix. The needle broke and there are no parts available here in Sweden so my fix is putting a bicycle speedo on it.

I'm glad it's a simple car - everything going on with it I can diagnose and fix but there's something really wonky going on.
It vibrates a bit when it gets moving but then I get up to cruising speed and the whole thing starts shaking really bad. Like, it feels like the front end is gonna start jumping. The gear stick slaps all over the place and the engine does the same.
If I give it more gas it stops, same if I let go. It only happens when I try to hold it steady. If I get it to high enough RPM then it stops, but at that point I'm driving way faster than I'd like to.

It happens mostly in 5th but I think it has something to do with it being under load because it happens in 4th going in some hills as well.
I've checked the motor mounts and they are fine.

I took a ride with a mechanic who thought it could be an inner CV joint and I'm gonna check on the later in the day but I want to know if there's anything else that could be causing it?

Thankful for all your help!

Meg 3 1.9dci engine hazart failure(p242f)
That kind of message was waiting for me in the car this morning. A quick check with elm327 gave that p242f code and nothing else.
Iv inspected the hoses and electric connections. Seem to be ok. Took a 20km run on motorway with high revs. For a preef moment the warning went to "check anti-pollution system" then back to engine hazart failure.
Car runs fine. All the 130 horses are there.

Is there a way to deal with this by driving a longer trips on motorway or do a have to the dealer for diagnostic?

What clutch is in a Scenic 2 1.5dci?
I need a new clutch, as it has started slipping in first gear. Only thing is, there is 2 different variants on eurocarparts for my car. I need to know if it has a central slave cylinder or without bearings? As those are under the fitments on their site.

Thanks.
Trafic cruise control dash switch
Anyone know if the cruise on/off switch located on the dash is a standard Renault switch fitted to other models too? (Laguna etc)

I’m about to try to retrofit cruise to my van but need the switch and don’t fancy paying £40+ for a single switch!

My van is a 63 plate trafic sport if that makes any difference.

Tearing Hair Out Clio 1.4 16v
Hi all, long time since I've been on the Renault forums (forgot user name & password...) so hi and thanks for having me.

I helped a friend with his 2003 Clio after he bought it from Dodgy Davey (not his real name) and having taken Dodgy Davey at his word that all the belts "had" been done, he thought no more of it and drove on merrily and in total ignorance, until the timing belt went!

Upon looking at the car & listening to it churn over for all of half a second, I knew it was terminal. However, not only was the belt snapped, the head gasket had been on it's way out for a while, so it was gonna die one way or another.

I digress... I removed the engine, got the head done for a very good price & also got a new clutch while the engine was out (new old stock from GSF for 33 quid).

The rebuild went well and she fired up 1st turn of the key and ran beautifully for all of a few seconds. So I restarted and it was fine-ish then it stalled. Hmmm.... I finished placing all the plastic bits & double checked connections and took it for a drive. It drove fine, then it would hunt.

Anyway, it would start fine run perfectly then be all over the place, so I code read it and it occasionally threw up a fault. That's right, for 5 starts it was code free, then crank sensor, so I deleted it and another few starts no codes. But live data showed the crank sensor to be faulty so decided to replace the crank sensor. Bingo! Started & ran perfectly.

I found it had been done before and a wire was bared, but no other obvious damage to the loom anywhere up to the ECU cage.

So for two whole days the car started and ran perfectly, until the lad stalled it and it was back to the hunting & stalling.

I took the car apart, checked:

carbon canister "O" ring was tight (check)
wiring loom (check)
inlet manifold (check)
all electrical connections clean & tight (check)
new crank sensor for contamination (check)
spark plugs (check)
injectors (check)
coils (check)
throttle body (check)

I have stripped everything off that I originally removed prior to rebuilding the engine, nothing is amiss that I can see. The only thing that had been previously replaced was the CS as I stated.

Now here's the thing, on live data the ignition timing was advancing to +30 then it would settle to +6 give or take + or - 1 (i.e. +5 or +7 with further advance when foot to the floor blip of the throttle)

But whilst idling, it would suddenly retard to -2.7 and the engine would almost die, hunt catch and advance to +6 or thereabout. We watched as it did this over & over.

So, what have I missed here? What could cause this phenomenon other than what showed up on code & live data as the crank sensor?

I checked the crank pulley for float, but I replaced the pulley bolt with a brand new one & she's tight at around 150Nm. The cams are spot on with the large "D's" pointing up and the pin is fully screwed in with the webbing of the crank resting against it.

I am fairly certain I haven't missed anything out, but this car is now getting to the stage where it will have a Guy sitting on the drivers seat come November the 5th (not me, the owner >:) )

Thanks all :wink2:

2015 Renault Traffic radio issue

Connecting Yatour bleutooth adapter to carminat radio
Hi, I'm having Trouble connecting my yatour bluetooth audio player to the carminat radio in my Renault Megane 3 of 2011. I've connected the cables as they suppost to be connected (the yatour comes packed with Renault 12 pin interface that is convertered to the big black box of wires that you just plugin to the carminat radio).

The bluetooth device shows up and and i can connect to it, i can also see it plays music but I'm not getting any sound. I would expect the sound to come from the aux input, but nothings there.

I do have some experience with this bluetooth adapter as i owned a Seat Leon before and also connected a yatour in there. There it would work as a CD changer (cd2 was the bluetooth player), but in the Megane i only see mono CD in the menu. Any thought?

Christian

Losing power

Renault Forums :: Independent Renault forum
Losing power
Hi.
My 2012 Renault fluence 1.5 DCI started losing power especially when driving on inclined ways and hieghts. Few days after that and when it was time for regular maintenance, the air filter was found to be very contaminated and changed with a new one side by side with oil and oil filter changed. I was hoping that this would end the problem, but unfortunately the same problem exists. No light is turned on the dashboard. Any advices please.
Thanks in advance
Nearly new Renaults in France
My mum is looking for a new car and you can buy Renault employees cars around 6 months old with a 27% discount. Similar deals available for Dacia's.
http://toprenault.com/
S/H cars go for carzy money in France, I thought a dealer near where mum lives in Nimes was having a laugh with 13 year old Fiesta on sale for 3,300 euros (about £2,940.00) but a check online showed he wasn't that much out of order. Certainly you don't see nearly as many new cars on the road proably because they don't do leasing company cars as we do.

Wing Mirror for Grand Scenic 3 - interchangeable case?
I got my drivers wing mirror smashed at front and stem and need to get a replacement, but can't find any 2nd hand ones in my colour (grey).
I see the casing is fine in my wing mirror, particulary where the matching grey paint is.
Could I just buy a different colour wing mirror and swap the casing?
Is it easy to do?
Renault espace iv seat in campervan
I'm looking at putting some seat at the rear of my campervan.

Ideally i would like 2 seat facing 2 seat to create a dining/table area.
Optionally, once in a while it could be could if the rear facing could be turned facing forward if i'm planning on driving longer with people in the back.

I've been looking at a lot of option.

The espace IV rear seat seem like a possible contender as they have incorporated 3 point seatbelt.

So here are a few question.

1) do they all fold down flat?

2) is some of them swivel?

3) else can they be clipped on the rail forward or backward regardless?

4) i have seen they come with two sort of rail short like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-E...sAAOSwZTBbml5J

or long like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-E...cAAOSw9Llbml4P
could you explain me how they work? do you put 4 seat in the long one or only two? is it long because the seat can slide along? is it the middle row is on long slider and the 3rd row on short sliders?

5) on the picture from under the rail there seem to be a couple of thing which protrude down what are these?

Renault Scenic 2.0 16v rear main leak
Dull Paint Finish
Hi. Iv filled an area of rust. Then used a couple of coats of halfords grey primer, a mixed to order rattle can of spray paint (metallic) which has been a really good colour match, sanded and then applied halfords clear lacquer couple of coats. This has been done over several days and it's now been three weeks since the lacquer went on.

The colour match is great but the finish is dull. It's not got the mirror shine which the rest of the car has got and to run your hand over it there's a rough texture. Can anyone advise how to get the right finish + what to do next? Thanks.

Dead USB Port for Radiosat 3D Sound By Arkamys Bluetooth in 09 Megane Mk3 iMusic

Renault Forums :: Independent Renault forum
Dead USB Port for Radiosat 3D Sound By Arkamys Bluetooth in 09 Megane Mk3 iMusic
I've searched about a bit and can't seem to find anything concrete about this issue.

I've got a 2009 Megane iMusic, which is kitted out with slightly better than awful stereo gear and uses the "Radiosat 3D Sound By Arkamys Bluetooth" system, complete with usb and aux connections for audio (allegedly) but the USB port appears to be either dead or non-functioning.

The info I got with the car suggests that I could use it for audio which would be grand but I can't get it to work.

I've tried every USB stick I own, formatted different ways, as well as using a usb cable attached to my phone and it doesn't seem to do anything (even charging my phone). It seems as though it's totally kaput - the fuses all seem fine for it as far as I can tell but because the aux in socket is functional I'm wondering if it's a connection issue with the head unit, or whether the USB port is only for updating the Radiosat stuff?

I lack the skills to diagnose this myself, but I could replace the port if push came to shove, but before I dig it out to get the part numbers and start to scour the interwebs for parts I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for discovering if the USB port is either single use (for updating software), or broken (no power to port), or both?

Thanks!
Kangoo Van Rear Door Solenoid
Hi
Has anyone had any experience of swapping a rear door solenoid on a Kangoo Van ? It was working fine but has now decided not too work.
I can still open the door from inside. I have removed the rear door card and had a quick check with connections etc so looks like it is a removal and replacement. Not sure what is connected to it altogether as space is tight ? Any diagrams would be helpful.

1.5 DCi Cambelt Change - Question about timing pins
I am planning a timing belt change.

Having read a number of documents on the procedure (including Renault Technical Document 6006A), I am confused about the "timing" (excuse the pun) of the removal of the timing pins.

In many of the documents, the procedure states to insert the crankshaft locking pin (in the lower engine block) the turn the crankshaft so that the crankshaft comes into contact with the end of the crankshaft timing pin.
Now, the camshaft timing pin should be fitted through the camshaft sprocket and into the cylinder head.

All straight forward so far.

But the next operation is to remove both timing pins.

Then remove the crankshaft accessories pulley bolt (which is torqued up to either 60 or 100nM, depending on the bolt size).

To enable the bolt to be removed, they suggest locking the flywheel with a screwdriver - is there an access hole or does the starter motor need to be removed?

I am concerned that the crankshaft and camshaft may move slightly during the bolt removal (as the timing pins have now been removed), and at no other point do the instructions say to re-insert the pins (to verify that the timing has not moved) BEFORE the belt is removed. So in other words, you are removing the belt with no way of keeping the crank and cam sprockets in their relative positions.

I appreciate that the sprockets wont "spin" freely, but would still prefer the pins to be fitted, to ensure no movement is possible.

Therefore, my main question is, why are the pins not re-inserted before the belt is removed? I thought that was the whole point - to keep camshaft and crankshaft in the correct positions while the belt is removed or the tension released.

I can appreciate that you would not want the pins fitted while trying to undo the crankshaft bolt, just in case the pin gets bent or shears off, but why not re-fit them BEFORE the belt tension is released or the belt removed? There must be good reason for this, or is this a procedural mistake?

Maybe I am being a bit too nervous about the need for the pins, once the timing has been verified, but just want to make sure I don't take a functioning engine and ruin it!

At this point I will say the last cambelt change I did was in 1992 on a Ford Escort with a 1600 CVH engine, so my experience of modern engines is limited.

Any thoughts on this, preferably from direct experience, would be appreciated.
Daughter needs a new car
Daughter needs a new car (old car) to accommodate a big dog and a new baby around Christmas time. Budget is around 3-4k which will probably be sponsored by me although that matter hasn't been raised yet. She's seeing four this weekend. Current contenders are -
2009 Mazda 3 hatchback 1.6; 2006 Daihatsu Terios 1.5; 2010 Nissan Qashqai 1.6 (over budget); 2010 Kia Sportage 2.0. All petrol and manual and around 70-85k on the clock. My choice would be between the Mazda and the Nissan, then maybe the Kia. Since I will be a thousand miles away I've also suggested she speak to her local friendly mechanic about spares etc. Any comments/advice? I have never owned any of these although I have owned other Nissans and Mazdas in the past.
Renault Megane Windows
Both the drivers door window and the passenger window behind the driver have stopped working. I have bought a new module as I was told this was the likely fault, but this has not made any difference, so has anybody any ideas where I should look

Rear brake light on 2013 Scenic
Hi,

I'm having problems trying to replace the brake light on my Scenic xMod in that I can't remove the casing! I've taken the two holding screws out but the rear drivers lighting unit just won't budge - it will live about 2mm but nothing more. Any tips? Do I just need to give it a good yank?

Thanks
