Gears or clutch?

Hi guys. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I have looked on the forum and found similar problems but with as much info as I can give, hopefully you may be able to advise me what could be wrong.

It started a while back now, couple of months, when changing gears, usually from say 3rd to 2nd or 5th to 3rd for a block change. Anyway, not all the time but they would crunch. If i were at traffic lights, car in neutral and then i got to put into 1st to pull off, crunch again. But this was only intermittent. Now last week i pulled up outside my house, reversed in my usual space and the gear would not come out of reverse, and even with the clutch pedal down, it was still trying to move. Turned off the car and kinda forced it out of reverse, everything was fine for a week or so.
Then every time I put the clutch pedal down, it makes a noise like a fan belt slipping but louder. and i can no longer get it into gear, but then if i turn off the engine, it pops into gear no probs at all.

I noticed a knocking too from the underneath of the car, so jacked it up and had a look. There seems to be either a gear linkage or clutch bar or something, that looks like its loose. at the end of it is a rubber like housing that it quite greasy. inside that is a spring like thing, which is also loose, could this be the issue? Many thanks in advance
