Modus (2009) Rear-Drum Ratchet Adjustment

Fitted new Bosch shoes (and pads) and enjoying better stopping power. Cleaned up rear-drum ratchets but difficult to adjust. Later read they are supposed to be self-adjusting by either:

a) Reversing and applying footbrake.

b) Reversing and applying handbrake.

Not sure which. Any ideas, or best done directly on the ratchet again, once the shoes have bedded-in? Thanks.
